The Sharon Timlin Memorial Event will return to Hopkinton for its 23rd year next month to raise funds for ALS research.

Runners and walkers will gather at Hopkinton High School on June 13 to take part in the 5K, which benefits The Angel Fund for ALS Research. The day includes the race, a kids color run and a tot trot. After all the running, participants and community members can enjoy a family fun day with crafts, music, food vendors, raffles and a meet and greet with Mike Timlin and other former Red Sox players.

The race is named in honor of Timlin’s mother, Sharon, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2001 and passed away a year later.

Stephanie Whelan, race chair for the event, said organizers are feeling good about participation this year. “We’re on track for similar attendance as we had last year,” she said, noting about 800 runners took part in the race. The sign-up period still is early, she explained, and more runners will sign up as the early sign-up deadline (May 29) approaches.

Whelan said that much of the day is similar to past years, though some changes have been made. She noted that organizers decided to offer official race T-shirts this year after opting for medals last year. “We found out that a lot of people missed the T-shirts,” she said, “so we brought them back.”

The tot trot — an event added last year — is returning. Whelan said the idea for the race for young kids came from a community member who also is a vendor at the family day. Organizers learned from her and other parents in the community that there was an appetite for some sort of event for younger children.

“It was clearly something that people were excited about,” Whelan said of the response the tot trot received. “Just watching the children participate was wonderful.”

The race and family day are big events that rely on volunteers. Whelan said that the event gets a lot of youth support, but organizers are always looking for adults to volunteer. She also encouraged community members to get involved in the race’s organizing committee, which she said is in need of additional support.

“We would love it if people would consider getting involved in helping to organize the event,” said Whelan. “Many hands make light work.”
