The Hopkinton Police Department is reminding residents to be careful on the ice this winter.

While people are taking a recent spell of colder weather as an opportunity to get out on the ice to skate, play hockey or go ice fishing, there are associated risks.

In a post on Facebook, the HPD notes that “no ice is 100% safe ice.”

“You should always consider ice potentially dangerous, as it’s impossible to judge ice conditions by appearance or thickness alone,” the post continues.

According to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife), factors that influence ice strength include the age of the ice and the condition of the waterway. Ice-bound rivers and streams may be more difficult to judge than a pond or lake, for example.

MassWildlife also cautions that ice does not freeze uniformly, and that “white ice or snow ice is only about half as strong as new clear ice and can be very treacherous.” It recommends that ice 2 inches or less in thickness be avoided.

In the event of falling through the ice, the HPD recommends an approach called “Preach-Reach-Throw-Go.” Those in a position to help are recommended to call 911, reach or throw rescue equipment if possible and leave the situation to go find help if it becomes too dangerous.
