The Health Department announced Tuesday night that mosquito samples taken from Hopkinton have tested positive for West Nile virus.

In a press release published to Facebook by Board of Health chair Nasiba Mannan, the department informed residents that a pool of positive mosquitoes was identified through routine surveillance in the northwest corner of Hopkinton, near Meadowland Drive. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) and the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP) have been monitoring mosquito populations in town.

According to the press release, no human or animal cases of West Nile have been identified in Hopkinton.

The Health Department has responded by asking CMMCP to enhance localized truck spraying in the affected neighborhood and surrounding area. In addition, the department is using targeted larvicide treatments and public education efforts to help further reduce the risk to residents.

Risk maps from MDPH put Hopkinton at a moderate risk level for West Nile virus, meaning an infection is likely or already has occurred. Five human cases of the virus have been detected in the state in 2026 — three of them in Middlesex County. All three of those cases were in individuals 60-90 years old.

While only a small number of the insects are infected with the virus at any given time, the Health Department still recommends residents take precautions to prevent mosquito bites. Recommendations from the state’s Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences include using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, avoiding outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, and removing standing water from around the home. It also suggests repairing windows and screens to keep the insects from entering living spaces.
