Letter to the Editor: Irwin for School Committee

by | May 11, 2026 | Letter to Editor

I’m writing to endorse Sandra Irwin for School Committee.

Local government works best when more people participate, not fewer. Sandra is doing exactly that. This would be her first elected board role, and I think that matters in a good way. She’s a fresh voice and throwing her hat in the ring because she cares about our schools, our kids and the future of Hopkinton.

She brings a unique perspective from the private sector and would have a singular focus and commitment to the School Committee. She is also a parent with children who are engaged in our schools, including interests in coding and athletics, so she understands both the academic and extracurricular sides of what helps students grow. I believe in welcoming new voices when they are willing to step forward, listen, learn and do the work.

I also believe Sandra understands that education is not just about chasing the newest or buzziest trend. We need School Committee members who can support innovation while staying grounded in what students actually need, and while focusing on technical literacy should be an imperative, I think Sandra shares the belief that human skills will matter even more in an AI-driven world: Having curiosity, good judgment, communication, teamwork and kindness go a long way.

It is about preparing children to be thoughtful, capable and decent people. At Marathon Elementary, students are taught to “be kind,” and my daughter gets genuinely excited when she brings home “cubby paws” for helping herself or helping others. That matters. You cannot learn that from a robot.

I believe Sandra Irwin will bring that balance, and I’m proud to support her.

— Parker Happ, Hopkinton
