As May 5 approaches, the Town of Hopkinton has a few key decisions to make. I am reaching out to the community in support of the adaptive playground project.
Hopkinton would benefit from adding an adaptive playground to promote accessibility, inclusion and enabling an opportunity for play among children of all abilities. Making sure all families have a space where they are comfortable spending time outside of their house will foster the community spirit that we have grown accustomed to in Hopkinton over the years.
Growing up on Elm Street, I spent countless hours at the Elmwood School playground. I was the youngest in a family of four, and we were able to organize a variety of different games with neighbors and kids from all over town to play the activity of the day. The playground fostered a sense of creativity to make sure we didn’t get bored doing the same thing over and over (or staying inside on a nice day) and enabled a sense of community. It brought together the families of Hopkinton, and I think having environments to enable that is critical for our town as we continue to grow.
I understand there are some concerns around the project being at the school, which will limit access during school hours. From my experience growing up in town, we did not feel limited by a playground being at Elmwood School or Center School but felt that it brought a deeper connection to the school. Coming from a family that has been a part of the schools — my grandfather was a math teacher, football coach and athletic director — I think fostering that connection is critical.
The adaptive playground project is important to make sure all kids and families have the opportunity to bond at an inclusive space. I am concerned about voter turnout both at Annual Town Meeting and on Election Day. If we don’t have enough in attendance, this important measure will not pass. My ask to the residents of Hopkinton is to show up and make your voice heard. Mark your calendars for May 5 and May 19!
