Driving westerly through Hopkinton on Main Street on a recent evening, dodging this way and that, my passenger hit upon — no, not raised structures, but a sport known as barrel racing, which will be familiar to the horse set. That is an event where a course is set up...
Recently, Open Play submitted a request to be considered for a TIF (Tax Increment Financing) for the new pickle/padel club the owner is currently constructing beside Fairview Estates. My interpretation of a TIF (and clearly I could be wrong) is that a TIF is an...
The federal government has shut down. What can I do? The federal government has been shut down since Oct. 1. I was hopeful that after the protests of Oct. 18, our federal representatives would return to Washington and, together, figure a way to get our government...
Let me express my appreciation for [Hopkinton Republican Town Committee chair] Jim Mirabile’s suggestion that those of us from different political perspectives meet to foster positive dialogue and mutual respect. As Hopkinton residents know, I am always happy to meet...
How do we move forward as a community? Last week, our nation suffered a blow to one of our most sacred freedoms: Freedom of Speech. A freedom not only safeguarded against government suppression by our First Amendment, but the keystone of our ability to self-govern “We...
When I watched the Aug. 14 Hopkinton School Committee meeting on HCAM, I was shocked by what I heard. At the start of the meeting, around the two-minute mark, member Chris Masters was trying to connect remotely and having technical difficulties. Chair Kyla McSweeney...
We need to change how we live. We need to do this for future generations, biodiversity and our own physical and mental health. We especially need this now while the federal government is supporting environmental degradation. People are resistant to change. They say it...
Courtesy of the San Diego Zoo, here are the new rules for the Horribles Parade. Please do not: Annoy, torment, pester, plague, molest, worry, badger, harry, harass, heckle, persecute, irk, bullyrag, vex, disquiet, grate, beset, bother, tease, nettle, tantalize or...
Hopkinton — You are invited to the virtual July Fourth Horribles Parade at noon. Because the Select Board chose not to provide insurance for the event as done previously, the parade will be done virtually on Hopnews.com. The theme is “Get Involved." The organizers...
PFAS, the forever chemicals lurking in your kitchen, clothes and even your takeout box are sticking around for way too long. You might not see them, but they’re everywhere — and they are never leaving. From nonstick cookware to water-repellent jackets, these toxic...
It was disappointing to hear public comments characterizing the July Fourth parade as a Republican parade. It is a town event. Always has been. Who stepped forward to facilitate the parade for the town has varied over its long history. My family organized it for many...
To the blithering idiot that thought it a good idea to pass, one, two or maybe three cars on Wood Street, between No. 200 and No. 164 Saturday eve at about 8, I trust you are relieved that I wasn’t driving a truck, but instead a GTI, and that I knew enough to look for...
Around 1970, we had a couple of incidents of fire equipment having trouble coming out of the station to answer a call. Fire Chief Arthur Stewart went before the Board of Selectmen to ask for red lights to be installed to stop traffic when we had an emergency call....
After reading the letter to the editor titled “HYFS a community cornerstone at risk," I felt it is important to add to this high level of concern from my own life experience. Families who come to the United States from other nations often embark on a journey driven by...
I am writing this letter to inform the town of inhumane practices regarding beaver population management in Hopkinton. Recently, a beaver trap was used in Bloods Pond on South Mill Street to trap and kill a beaver. Despite calls to the Hopkinton Police Department and...
IYKYK, as the kids say. Families who have taken part in the Hopkinton Public Schools music program know our high school’s musical program is a gem. And its director, Craig Hay? A real diamond. As today’s world prioritizes STEM over arts, and our federal government is...
To the person who has been riding a fat-tired bike onto Terry Field off Center Trail: Please stop doing that! You are gouging large ruts in the field, which is one of the most beautiful attractions along the trail. You are also damaging private property and risking...
In light of the discussion during the Hopkinton Select Board’s May 27th meeting, I am writing to highlight what appears to be a concerning shift in how we define “new leadership.” The phrase was used repeatedly — and tellingly — as a synonym for youth, suggesting that...
One of my first memories of Matt Kizner is him walking up to the mic and asking a question of one of our town leaders. He was new to town at the time, yet cared enough and was courageous to cut through the chase. I continue to see the ability to process information,...
I’m writing to support Jeff Doyle for the Hopkinton [Select Board]. Jeff grew up in town and is now choosing to raise his own family here, it's clear he has made a commitment to this community. He is concerned about our commercial base, the budget, clean water and...
