The Select Board at its meeting Tuesday night voted unanimously in favor of naming a new street Hoyt Way in honor of Boston Marathon legend Dick Hoyt, who passed away last month at the age of 80. He was a familiar figure in town, often speaking to schoolchildren about his experiences pushing his paraplegic son, Rick, in the Boston Marathon and other races around the world. A statue of the Hoyts is in front of Center School.

The street will be located at Hopkinton Village Center, a residential development that will be constructed behind 25-35 Main Street.

Developer Chuck Joseph initially proposed the street be called Hoyt’s Run, but he told the board that he changed it to Hoyt Way after consultation with the Hoyt family.

“He’s been such an inspiration to the community,” Joseph said of Hoyt.

The board expressed full support for the idea.

“I think it’s a wonderful sentiment,” vice chair Irfan Nasrullah said. “I think it means an awful lot.”

Town adds school item to STM warrant

The board voted unanimously to sign the Special Town Meeting warrant with the inclusion of the Elmwood School replacement project, joining the means tested senior citizen property tax exemption.

The Special Town Meeting will be held within the Annual Town Meeting on May 8 at the high school football field.

New trail gets name

The board voted unanimously to name a new trail off Hayden Rowe Street, just south of Teresa Road, the Hughes Farm Trail, to represent the property’s history.

Peter LaGoy of the Trail Coordination and Management Committee explained that the stone dust trail runs along an old farm road through land that was farmed by the Hughes family for about 70 years. The town purchased the property in 2012.
