Fundraiser set up for family of Hopkinton mother of 4 who died at 29

The family of Maria Torres-Purvis, a 29-year-old Hopkinton mother of four who worked at Muffin House Cafe on Main Street, has started a fundraiser following her death on Sept. 28.

According to the GoFundMe page, Torres-Purvis’ sister, Tyechia James, indicated that Torres-Purvis was in a car accident on Sept. 25 and “sustained life-threatening injuries.”

“Although we have hoped and prayed for a better outcome, we will sadly be saying our last goodbyes within the next few days as Maria was not able to overcome her injuries,” James wrote. “Maria leaves behind [her] husband and their four young children. Sadly, our family is now faced with the excruciating task to make preparations and resume life in the wake of this loss. On-top of all the emotional pain and stress that a death brings, it also brings significant financial costs. Therefore, we have created this GoFundMe to raise money for her family to help defer the upcoming funeral costs and any other expenses that are coming their way.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, more than $14,000 had been donated, surpassing the $10,000 goal.

The obituary for Torres-Purvis indicates that she graduated from Marlborough High School in 2010, and after briefly pursuing a career as a nurse’s assistant, starting working at Muffin House. “Many would start their morning with a cup of coffee, a muffin, and her smile as she greeted them every day,” the obituary reads.

She leaves behind her husband and four children, ranging in ages from 3 to 13.

A funeral was scheduled for Thursday morning in Norfolk, followed by burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Hopkinton.
