Memorial Day schedule announced

Hopkinton’s Veterans Celebration Committee recently announced plans for Memorial Day observances on Monday, May 30.

The day’s events will begin at Evergreen Cemetery in Woodville at 9:45 a.m. with the placing of a wreath by American Legion and Scouts representatives, followed by the reading of the Gettysburg Address and a gun salute from the Old Guard New England.

At 10:15 a.m. at the King Flagpole on Mayhew Street, there will be a placing of a wreath followed by the Gettysburg Address. At 10:30, the group will walk over to St. John’s Cemetery for the placing of a wreath, a prayer and a gun salute.

At 10:45 a.m. the ceremonies will move to the neighboring Mt. Auburn Cemetery. There will be a salute to the flag by the Scouts, the placing of a wreath by American Legion and Scouts representatives, a prayer and a gun salute.

The ceremony will shift to the Town Common at 11:15 a.m. Events there will include an invocation, the placing of a wreath by American Legion and Scouts representatives, remarks from speakers, and another gun salute from the Old Guard New England. There also will be music from the Hopkinton High School band, under the direction of Craig Hay.

Taps and the raising of the flag will take place at noon.

A collation will be held at St. John’s Church following the services.
