Town requests residents curb lawn sprinkler use

by | Sep 12, 2024 | News

The town is requesting residents’ help in preserving municipal water supplies by shutting off lawn sprinklers.

In a press release, the town explained it is asking residents on municipal water to turn off any lawn sprinkler systems to help in preserving water for essential needs and fire protection.

“This proactive step can help prevent the need for further mandatory restrictions on all outdoor water use,” it stated.

According to the release, the town has not experienced “any significant rainfall” in over a month, and as a result, groundwater levels have decreased and aquifers are slower to recharge.

Meanwhile, consumption of water resources remains high.

These conditions have led to a reduction in water production. Coupled with a forecast predicting “above-average temperatures and no substantial rainfall,” these factors are putting stress on Hopkinton’s water systems.

Those interested in learning more about water conservation and practical steps for reducing water use can visit the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s website.

Nothing to do with continuous development, just lawn sprinklers. Makes sense.
