Business Profile: HCA uses art as an expressive tool in uncertain times

by | Apr 8, 2020 | Business

The Hopkinton Center for the Arts has transitioned many classes to a virtual format, and discounted registration is open until May 10 for summer programs.

“Art has a wonderfully unique way of enabling people to connect with and express their true feelings. This is especially valuable when the surrounding world is in turmoil,” co-director Kris Waldman stated. “In the act of painting, dancing, singing or sculpting, art connects us to a deep sense of ourselves where we can feel at peace and happy.”

Online classes are intentionally limited to no more than 12, so students have a more enriching, almost one-on-one, learning experience. According to Waldman, “The response has been fantastic.”

As always, the HCA’s talented artist instructors teach classes in the fine arts, acting and theater, music, singing and dancing and even ceramics.

“Right now, clay is available for pickup,” Waldman explained, “so adult students can enjoy hand-building pots, bowls and mugs at home while interacting online with their teacher. It’s all about being adaptable and resilient in these challenging times. If the current climate looms into early summer, we’ll be ready for that, too.”

New and continuing students are enrolling now, and morning, afternoon and evening classes are available. Interested individuals can call or email about trying the first class at no cost. Young adults are welcome to enroll in most adult courses, and full and partial scholarships are available, if needed, through online application.

There’s an opportunity for everyone at the HCA.

Waldman notes planning is already underway for the Summer Winds concert with the Claflin Hill Orchestra and an Auto & Art Festival & Fundraiser, but with the cancellation of recent key programs, the center expects a $40,000 shortfall.

“We’d love members and friends to consider supporting the HCA and our various programs during this challenging time,” Waldman said. “Bridging the gap with any size donation would be greatly appreciated.”

This amazing community resource touches the heart and soul, delights the senses, inspires creativity and encourages broadening horizons. That’s something everyone needs, especially right now.
