Sandy Beach weekend opening delayed to May 31

by | May 23, 2025 | Featured: News, News

Hopkinton residents will have to wait one more weekend to use Sandy Beach following issues with weather and staffing.

In a recent Facebook post, the Parks & Recreation Department announced it would be delaying the opening of weekend hours at Sandy Beach. The beach was supposed to open for residents on Saturday.

“Unfortunately, due to the weather forecast and some staffing changes, we are delaying the opening of the Sandy Beach public opening until next weekend,” the post states.

The beach now will be open for residents starting May 31. Operating hours will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Although the beach’s opening has been delayed, Parks & Rec Director Jon Lewitus says he and his staff are ready for the season.

“We’re excited to get going,” said Lewitus.

Some changes are coming to Sandy Beach this year that will impact beachgoers. An updated pass purchasing policy now is in effect, and it raises the prices of some beach passes and changes where passes can be picked up.

Staffing changes have been implemented as well.

“We’ve revamped our staff training for our gate guards and our lifeguards,” Lewitus said.

The updated training will allow beach staff to keep a better eye on permits and beachgoers, he explained.

Still in the works are a new mural on the bathhouse and a long-awaited boat ramp nearing installation. Lewitus also mentioned that improvements to the Sandy Beach parking lot likely will occur later in the summer, at the start of fiscal year 2026.

Weekend hours at Sandy Beach will run from May 31-June 22. The regular beach season is set for June 23-Aug. 16.
