Hopkinton Today for Monday, April 20: Chilly day on tap for Boston Marathon

by | Apr 20, 2026 | Featured: Features, Hopkinton Today

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Marathon Monday has arrived

In case you have not heard, there’s a road race in town today.

The 130th running of the Boston Marathon starts in Hopkinton this morning. Some 30,000 runners will stop into town to prepare for their journey to Boston. Click here for a list of runners from Hopkinton, along with each’s bib number and the starting wave to which they have been assigned.

Roads will be closed by 7 a.m., so if you need to get near the center of town, go early. On-street parking will not be allowed in the area of the start line (on Main Street, next to the Town Common) or the athletes village (the middle school/high school complex).

Temperatures are expected to be near freezing in the early morning and rise into the 40s by the start of the race — and stay there for the rest of the day. There is a small chance of rain.

If you’d prefer to stay warm and watch the event on television, WCVB (Channel 5) will have coverage from 4 a.m.-8 p.m., and ESPN will join in from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The schedule for the start is as follows:

6 a.m. — Military march
9:06 a.m. — Men’s wheelchairs
9:09 a.m. — Women’s wheelchairs
9:30 a.m. — Handcycles and duos
9:37 a.m. — Professional men
9:47 a.m. — Professional women
9:50 a.m. — Para athletes
10 a.m. — Wave 1
10:15 a.m. — Wave 2
10:28 a.m. — Wave 3
10:41 a.m. — Wave 4
11:01 a.m. — Wave 5
11:21 a.m. — Wave 6

In addition to the individuals with local ties selected by the Hopkinton Marathon Committee to start the final four waves of runners, Hopkinton’s Alex Danahy, a longtime volunteer, will fire the gun for the para athletics division.

Others honored with starting duties include two-time wheelchair champion Susannah Scaroni (men’s and women’s wheelchairs), Russ Hoyt from Team Hoyt (handcycles and duos), Boston Bruins legend Zdeno Chara (professional men), 2018 Boston women’s champion Des Linden (professional women), National Black Marathoners Association co-founder Tony Reed (Wave 1) and Christina Whelton, a member of the Brown family that has been tied to the race for more than a century (Wave 2). Chara and Linden also are entrants for this year’s race, so they’ll jump in the pack soon after their ceremonial duties are over.

The pre-race national anthem will be performed by Phaedra Butler of Cambridge. An award-winning singer, songwriter and producer, she will be releasing her “Heart of A Woman” album this summer.
