Hopkinton named No. 2 safest city in America for 2020

Hopkinton was tabbed as the second safest city in America for 2020, according to the newly released 100 Safest Cities in America rankings by the national security analysis website SafeWise.

Last year Hopkinton held the No. 1 spot. This year the top honor went to Broadview Heights, Ohio, which was No. 6 a year ago. Rounding out the top five are Oakland Township, Michigan; Ridgefield, Connecticut; and Bergenfield, New Jersey. There were 25 New Jersey cities and towns in the top 100. Massachusetts was second with 15, with nearby Franklin (No. 7) and Shrewsbury (9) cracking the top 10. Shrewsbury was No. 2 in 2019.

According to the statistics on the SafeWise website, Hopkinton, with 18,516 residents, has a violent crime rate of 0.1 per 1,000 residents, and a property crime rate of 1.6 per 1,000. The chart also indicates that the median income of Hopkinton’s households is $113,354.

“Hopkinton has been and remains the benchmark of safety to which surrounding towns aspire to emulate,” Select Board chair Brendan Tedstone texted. “Our public safety teams are outstanding in what they do. I could not be more proud of the jobs that our selfless men and women do day in and day out. In light of what’s going on nationally, it’s one more reason why it’s so wonderful to call Hopkinton home. Our police, fire, EMS and DPW employees exemplify what it means to work in public safety.”

SafeWise is a national company that, according to its website, “contextualize[s] national crime and safety trends to show how they affect you and your neighborhood” and “examine[s] safety and security products” and alerts security companies about flaws or gaps in coverage.

In its explanation about its methodology, SafeWise indicates it uses FBI crime statistics and U.S. census population data along with a proprietary State of Safety research study.
