Greyhound Friends in Hopkinton will host its first summer day program next week to educate children and families on animal sheltering.
Veronica Zolina, an event volunteer, explained the program on July 25 will show kids more about what shelter work involves. The day will feature a talk, a shelter tour, a question and answer session and opportunities to connect with the greyhounds and other sighthounds on site. The event is ticketed, though children 5 and under can attend for free.
Zolina noted that the program came together following requests from parents looking to bring their kids to the shelter. “We thought we’d make a group event of it,” she said.
The shelter runs a program throughout the school year about greyhounds and other sighthound breeds. It focuses on why these dogs are unique and is geared toward young audiences. The upcoming family day will be similar but more interactive, Zolina explained.
“We’ll bring out dogs to pet so they have a hands-on introduction,” she said. Zolina added that families also will have a chance to walk the dogs on the grounds.
This educational program is important for community outreach and engagement, Zolina explained. “We’ve been around for 40 years,” she said. “It’s important for our neighbors to know who we are and what we’re about.”
The day also provides opportunities to engage youth and give everyone a positive experience with dog breeds that, Zolina explained, have not been thought of in recent history as family pets.
“Everybody who has a good experience with our dogs has the chance to spread the message about our shelter and our dogs,” she added.

Three rising eighth grade girls from Hopkinton were on the bronze medal-winning club team that played at Finland’s Helsinki Cup from July 6-11. Liat Casady (front row, far right), Nili Casady (back row, second from right) and Riddhi Singh Redhu (back row, far right) were on the NEFC Rise under-14 team, joined by 10 other New Englanders and three Finnish players. NEFC was the only American team at the tournament, which featured 1,729 teams from 18 countries. Although the girls had never played together beforehand, they dominated pool play, posting three wins and a tie without allowing a goal. They then won their quarterfinal before finally being stopped by the top-ranked European U14 team (HJK) in the semifinals.
