State police were investigating the cause of a crash on Interstate 495 Thursday afternoon in Hopkinton.
Two vehicles — a passenger car and a box truck — were involved in the incident, which occurred on I-495 northbound around the 57 mile marker. The highway was shut down due to the incident.
One person had to be extracted from the passenger vehicle and taken to UMass Medical Center for evaluation.
“We’re not sure what their injury levels were,” said Hopkinton Fire Chief Gary Daugherty. “They were transported from the scene before we arrived.”
He was able to report that the driver of the box truck was not injured.
According to an HFD post on X, crews responded to the scene at about 3:00 p.m. Their role on-scene was to assist with vehicle removal.
“We’re working with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the towing company to get these vehicles cleared,” said Daugherty.
One of the complicating factors in the cleanup was the condition of the truck. It went up on a guardrail as a result of the crash.
“It actually ruptured its fuel tank, so we’re trying to mitigate that,” Daugherty explained.
The high-speed and middle travel lanes were closed up to exit 58 (I-90) due to the cleanup operations, according to a MassDOT announcement. The closures were expected to continue through the afternoon peak period, and drivers were asked to plan accordingly.
UPDATE, Aug. 22: Massachusetts State Police reported in a statement that the box truck struck a guardrail and then crossed several lanes of traffic, striking the passenger vehicle. The driver was left with serious injuries. The high-speed and middle lanes remained closed past 4:30 p.m.
