Letter to the Editor: HHS seniors deserve DJ money

by | Oct 22, 2026 | Letter to Editor

I am writing to express my strong disappointment regarding Select Board vice chair Matt Kizner’s opposition to allocating $2,000 toward a DJ for the Hopkinton High School senior class party. What makes this objection particularly frustrating is that these funds do not come from the town’s general fund — yet resistance is still being offered to a small gesture of support for our graduating seniors.

Hopkinton High School students contribute an incredible amount of volunteer time and energy to our community. They serve on town committees and dedicate countless selfless hours to local organizations, including Project Just Because, Baypath Humane Society and the Michael Lisnow Respite Center. Just this past week, members of the HHS football team were rightfully praised for their extraordinary support of Respite Center clients during Michael’s Run. Year after year, our youth show up for Hopkinton when called upon.

Furthermore, these students cheerfully endure the significant annual disruptions and inconvenience caused by the Boston Marathon staging at the middle and high school campus. Giving back to them in a small way is the very least the town can do.

While senior class officers and parents work tirelessly to raise substantial funds and contribute out of pocket to cover the costs of graduation events, getting a contribution like this helps defray expenses and ensures the event remains inclusive for all families, regardless of financial means.

Our seniors have given so much back to Hopkinton. Denying them support from non-general fund monies sends the wrong message to our young community leaders. It is time we show our students the same generosity and support they consistently offer to us.
