Letter to the Editor: McSweeney for School Committee

I am writing to express my support for Kyla McSweeney for the Hopkinton School Committee. It’s hard to imagine a candidate with better professional credentials to serve on the School Committee than Kyla. She has a background in early childhood education and leadership and policy in early childhood education, and she currently works at the Department of Early Childhood Education and Care, where she manages grant funding.

From the start of her tenure on the School Committee, Kyla jumped right in, taking a leadership role in the searches for a new superintendent of schools last year and the director of student services this year. She has been vocal in the budget process and policy discussions and was elected to be the chair of the School Committee this year. Kyla has been collaborative in her approach to working not just with other School Committee members but also with other town boards and committees, which was important as we worked with town partners to pass a budget that focused on the needs of the students and schools while meeting the School Committee’s fiduciary responsibility to the town.

The next couple of years have been predicted by the town to present increased fiscal challenges, and we need School Committee members with experience and understanding of the requirements and responsibilities of the job to lead us forward. Kyla’s experience both professionally and as an elected leader make her an ideal candidate to meet this challenge. I hope you will join me in voting for Kyla McSweeney for School Committee at the Annual Town Election on Monday, May 18.
