Town announces FY 25 residential water/sewer rate changes

by | Jul 11, 2024 |

Interim Town Manager Elaine Lazarus and the Hopkinton Water and Sewer Department on Thursday announced new water and sewer rate changes for residents that went into effect on July 1.

The Select Board on June 18 voted to raise water rates by 40% rather than a proposed 50% spike. To help lessen the impact, sewer rates remain unchanged from the previous fiscal year.

Water and sewer rates for FY 25 are listed below:

Water

The Select Board voted to set water rates for FY 25 with an increase of 40% as follows:

  • Customers using 0-1,000 cubic feet will be billed the minimum of $52.18.
  • Customers using 1,001-8,000 cubic feet will be billed $6.37 per 100 cubic feet.
  • Customers using more than 8,000 cubic feet will be billed $13.22 per 100 cubic feet.

Sewer

The Select Board voted to set sewer rates for FY 25 with no increase over FY 24. The rates are as follows:

  • Customers using 0-1,000 cubic feet will be billed $10.62 per 100 cubic feet.
  • Customers using 1,001-8,000 cubic feet will be billed $12.60 per 100 cubic feet.
  • Customers using more than 8,000 cubic feet will be billed $15.58 per 100 cubic feet.

The Select Board also voted on June 18 to implement a discount of up to $200 per year on Water Enterprise bills for certain residential water system users and a $200 discount per year on Sewer Enterprise bills for certain residential sewer users.

Residents are eligible for these discounts if they receive property tax exemptions from the Hopkinton Board of Assessors under specific clauses (17, 22, 37, and 41 of Section 5 in Chapter 59 of the Massachusetts General Laws), or receive the Hopkinton Means-Tested Senior Citizen Property Tax Exemption tied to the Massachusetts Circuit Breaker Tax Credit.

Residents with billing questions should contact the Hopkinton Water and Sewer Department at 508-497-9765 or email Kim Benitich at kbenitich@hopkintonma.gov.
