Man charged with striking woman with car in ‘apparent road rage incident’ Thursday

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Hopkinton Police Chief Joseph Bennett released a statement Friday morning that Ryan Sweatt, 36 of Milford, has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, operating to endanger and a marked lanes violation in connection with striking a 26-year-old female with his car Thursday night in Hopkinton.

The statement, released by the Middlesex County DA’s Office, referred to the case as an “apparent road rage incident.”

“The preliminary investigation suggests that Sweatt was operating a Honda Civic on Route 85 in Hopkinton when he became engaged in an apparent road rage incident with another vehicle,” according to the statement. “At some point, some of the occupants of the other vehicle, including the victim, exited the car. Sweatt subsequently made a U-turn at a high rate of speed and struck the victim in the roadway.”

The victim was struck in the vicinity of Cornell’s Irish Pub on Hayden Rowe Street. Massachusetts State Police responded to the crash at about 6:25 p.m. at the request of the Hopkinton Police Department to assist with the investigation. A portion of Hayden Rowe Street was blocked off for several hours Thursday night.

Sweatt was expected to be arraigned Friday morning in Framingham District Court. He was arrested and booked late Thursday night, according to an email Bennett shared with the Hopkinton Independent.

The victim was transported to a local hospital Thursday night with what were described as “life-threatening injuries.” Her name was not released.

This is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, Hopkinton Police, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s office, Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section and Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis Section.

More details will be released as information becomes available.
