Proclamation by Select Board recognizes HPL during National Library Week

The Hopkinton Public Library is celebrating National Library Week this week bolstered by recognition from the Select Board.

During the April 7 Select Board meeting, members voted via consent agenda to proclaim April 19-25 as National Library Week in Hopkinton. The proclamation promotes the value of libraries to the community, including offering opportunities for lifelong learning, free and equitable access to resources, and remaining centers of intellectual freedom and free expression.

It also spoke to the theme of this year’s National Library Week: “Find Your Joy.”

“During this week, we encourage all residents to visit their library, explore its resources, and celebrate all the ways that the library helps our community find joy,” the proclamation concludes.

HPL Director Nanci Hill expressed gratitude for the Select Board’s support. “We are lucky and honored to have the board’s and residents’ support in many ways,” she wrote in an email. She added that the recognition signals to library staff that their work is appreciated and recognized.

Hill explained that she had asked the board to make the proclamation, forwarding resources from the American Library Association (ALA). The ALA organizes National Library Week annually in an effort to highlight “the valuable role libraries and library professionals play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities,” according to its website.

The proclamation, Hill continued, helps inform the town that the board acknowledges the HPL’s value to the community. She noted that value is available to all residents, regardless of economic status or life stage.

“The Hopkinton Public Library is truly the gem of this community,” Hill stated. “It is the only place in town that serves every resident from birth through death, free of charge.”

Throughout the week, the HPL has encouraged community involvement with a whiteboard in its lobby where patrons can share what brings them joy about the library. With school out for vacation this week, Hill said the library also has been busy running special programs. She encouraged residents to check out the library’s calendar of events, even as National Library Week draws to a close.
