Julia Chun, the town’s sustainability, economic development and equity project manager, will lead a webinar tonight that will discuss how the town and residents can prepare for climate change.
The webinar, which will start at 8 p.m. and run about two hours, will walk residents through a recently completed climate action plan developed for Hopkinton through the Metropolitan Area Planning Council. The first half of the webinar will focus on the details of that plan, while the second half is reserved for questions and sharing resources.
“We outline the highest impact … actionable steps for us to get to net zero by 2045,” said Chun.
This plan is one of several steps the town is taking to become carbon neutral and reduce its environmental footprint. Annual Town Meeting in 2023 adopted a net zero resolution for the town, and efforts like a proposed zero emission vehicle policy are aimed at helping the town achieve that goal.
Chun noted that “building and transportation are the highest impact” when it comes to Hopkinton’s carbon footprint.
She also explained that the town could be prone to climate issues such as inland flooding and heat effects. Providing information about the climate action plan could help residents and municipal leaders plan for those emergencies.
“[It will] help community members really know what the next best steps are to prepare for climate change,” Chun said.
As to why the town is offering the webinar, Chun explained that getting the town to net zero will require collective effort.
“Education is really our greatest power right now,” she said. “This is a good spot [to start].”
Those interested in attending can signup on the webinar’s Eventbrite page.
