Filtration system could push Sandy Beach repaving to next spring

The Parks & Recreation Commission learned last week that a plan to repave Sandy Beach likely will be delayed until early next year.
Parks & Rec Director Jon Lewitus informed the commission during his director’s report at the June 9 meeting that a full presentation about the paving project would occur July 14. However, recent tests at Sandy Beach may result in design changes that push the timeline back farther than anticipated.
Lewitus explained that soil samples of the site showed there was more infill than natural soil underneath the pavement. “The [contractors] think there’s going to have to be a filter system more intricate than what they actually planned,” he said. As a result, he estimated the project would be completed April 2027.
“While it’s not ideal, we’ll still have it in time for the summer of 2027,” Lewitus added.
The commission has discussed the projected timeline for the Sandy Beach paving project since February. Early concerns were raised over coordination between the Department of Public Works, Facilities and Engineering and the contractors to get the project done ahead of this season.
A later update provided by Lewitus in March amended the timeline from this spring to later this fall. The project is expected to take 3-4 weeks to complete due to necessary repairs to the lot’s drainage.
Chair Kyle Smith questioned how definitive the delay to April 2027 was.
“I’d put the percentage low, but I wouldn’t put it at zero,” replied Lewitus. “By July 14, well know for sure.”
