I do not agree with School Committee members Joe Markey and Prof. Meg Tyler’s stance on masks. I think masks should be in place until our Board of Health Director mandates otherwise. I do, however, support the two School Committee members’ rights to hold a differing...
As a Hopkinton resident and parent of a third- and fifth-grader in our community, I urge the School Committee to add a vote regarding face coverings to Thursday's meeting agenda. Subsequently, I would then encourage the committee to vote to allow ALL students in the...
I was surprised and disappointed to see a letter printed recently from a resident telling the public to “be careful with pit bulls.” These are wonderful dogs that make great family pets with the right care and training. An owner surrender to a shelter can mean lots of...
The Upper Charles Trail Committee (UCTC) presented its proposed route in December and has received significant public feedback appreciative of the efforts and also challenging segments 1 to 6 for safety concerns and more. The paved trail would start on Route 85 where...
I really disagree with our local veterinarian who was calling others in the public “ignorant” and that “it is unfair to single out pit bulls,” when someone notes future dog adopters “should be careful with pit bulls.” The statement “Be careful with pit bulls” is based...
Many thanks to Mary Ellen Gambon for her thorough reporting on the Jan. 19 meeting of the Upper Charles Trail Committee (UCTC), where an alternative route was presented by the Hopkinton Trails Club. There was only one error in the piece, but an important one. The...
(Editor's note: For background and additional information on this topic, check the Independent's coverage here.) Last year, a School Calendar Committee was formed that I served on and we were tasked with reviewing if the existing school calendar is meeting the needs...
I am writing to comment on the process related to the issue of the Upper Charles Trail connection in Hopkinton to the Milford section. I listened with great interest to the informative presentation by Peter LaGoy, co-chair of the Trails Club, at the Upper Charles...
In view of the current discussion about the routing and surfacing of the Hopkinton portion of the Upper Charles Trail, I’d like to alert readers to the results of a petition I initiated in 2020. I collected signatures in person on Center Trail (which will surely form...
I was extremely disturbed by the remark from a Hopkinton community member regarding her warning: “Adopters should be careful with pit bulls.” As a veterinarian, I am disappointed by the ignorance of such comments. Of course all potential adopters should be mindful of...
At the anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection, it is time we recognized the true heroes of the Republican party. They are not the dopey louts who rampaged through our nation’s capital and the moral cowards who still cover for them. They are not the ranting demagogues...
The Upper Charles Trail Committee’s proposal to put the Upper Charles Trail on Hayden Rowe Street creates immediate dangers. Hayden Rowe (Route 85) is a main thoroughfare for ambulances traveling to Milford Regional Hospital as well as for fire and police vehicles...
We were surprised and concerned when reading the December 8th edition article “Devoted dogs seek new home.” The adoptable dogs are two pit bulls weighing 50 and 90 pounds and came as an “owner surrender.” We would hope that if the dogs are adopted no babies or...
There has been much discussion about how dangerous West Main Street is in front of Cumberland Farms. No left turn could help, but I haven’t heard any discussion about lowering the speed limit in that stretch of roadway. I’ve observed drivers merging from 495 onto West...
As a member of the Hopkinton Garden Club, we would like to thank you for publishing [the Dec. 8 website] photo of the downed “Welcome to Hopkinton” sign. The Hopkinton Garden Club had this sign made about 20 years ago, with contributions from the Hopkinton Women’s...
The Trails Club thanks all those who attended the recent Upper Charles Trail Committee’s public forum. We also thank the committee for their work to date, and look forward to seeing this project move forward with careful consideration given to the concerns expressed...
I am a member of the Hopkinton Trails Club. Since forming in 2005, we’ve developed major trails (including the Center Trail), assisted in the creation of the town's Trail Coordination & Management Committee, and led over 130 walks to introduce the town’s trails to...
When Joe Pyne passed away [Nov. 2], Hopkinton lost a homegrown character, a good guy. Joe and I were friends for over 70 years. Joe was a couple of years older than me, so we didn’t meet at school. In 1949, my father was the engineer at the water pumping station on...
I am writing to spread the awareness and instructions of the upcoming Scouting For Food event. As part of a national Boy Scouts of America program, Scouting for Food in Hopkinton is organized by the Hopkinton Scout Leaders Association and includes the Hopkinton Boy...
Fall is in the air and, hopefully, turtles have by now gone to a suitable location for their long winter’s nap. You may notice some empty signposts that previously held “turtle crossing” signs. The signs (and the turtles) will be back come spring. Road-crossing...
